Developmental Editing

Developmental editing looks at the bigger picture. It precedes line- and copyediting and involves a round of deeper editorial changes. Fiction and non-fiction developmental editing are very different tasks. I only offer developmental editing for academic non-fiction at present.

It consists of…

  • detailed comments to improve the structure and style of your work
  • tips on how to best organise your work
  • significant changes made to many sentences with the aim of presenting your ideas as clearly as possible
  • a separate round of comments and edits before copyediting
  • a supportive review, focused on text organisation and flow (i.e. not on subject knowledge)
  • an editorial report (for book projects)
